Rancho Cucamonga, CA, November 1, 2017 – The IMA®  Inland Empire Chapter is proud to announce our November Technical Meeting. The next meeting will take place on Thursday November 16th, 2017.

This month we welcome Matthew Wilson, Partner with Wilson Ivanova Certified Public Accountants, Inc. Matthew will be updating us on the new Revenue Recognition Standard.

 The FASB issued an Accounting Standards Update (ASU) deferring the effective date of the new revenue recognition standard to annual reporting periods beginning after December 15,2017. That's next month! Presently GAAP has complex, detailed, and disparate revenue recognition requirements for specific transactions and industries. As a result, different industries have used different accounting for economically similar transactions. So what does the new standard mean for you and your company?

 This presentation will address:

 •           What's the big deal with the new standard?

           Overview of the new standard.

           Key provisions & the impact areas for your company.

           Practical considerations and challenges to systems

 About the speaker

Matthew has been serving privately help companies since 1995 and has extensive experience providing accounting and consulting services to the manufacturing and construction industries. He is the Past President of the Inland Empire chapter of CalCPA and chair of the Accounting Advisory board at Cal State San Bernardino. Matthew also serves as part time professor for CSUSB, teaching auditing and reporting.

This month we welcome David Wall, CPA, CFE, Director from Vincenti Lloyd Stutzman LLP. David will discuss “Fundamental Concepts in Occupational Fraud.”

This presentation is centered on how business owners and managerial accountants can identify fraud. The presentation will highlight theories of occupational fraud and examine statistical data on perpetrators & categories of fraudulent behavior. We will discuss:

  • General theories of occupational fraud
  • Predictive data & “red flags” regarding how to identify occupational fraud
  • Standard approaches to remediation of occupational fraud

About the speaker

David has been employed in the areas of financial investigation and fraud examination in Southern California for over 25 years.

David is a director in the forensics practice of Vincenti Lloyd Stutzman LLP, a 63-year-old accounting firm. David leads the forensic investigation in governmental entities, nonprofit organizations, and middle market corporations. He represents a number of prosecutorial offices, including the Riverside County District Attorney, and works on behalf of private litigants involving fraud, embezzlement, breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent transfer, and similar claims.

David’s specialties include the acquisition, reconstruction, and analysis of financial records, and the presentation of observations & opinion to judges and juries.

This month we welcome Manfred Keil, Ph.D from Claremont McKenna College. Manfred will be presenting “Make the Inland Empire Great Again? An Economic Update with a New President”.

What does the future hold for the Inland Empire?

Dr. Keil will be addressing the following with regard to the Inland Empire economy:

           Low unemployment and decent growth: How Good Does it Feel?

           What will Make the Inland Empire Great Again?

           The effect of a Trump presidency on the U.S. and CA economy.

Professor Keil has been a professor of economics at Claremont McKenna College since 1995. He was the Chair of Faculty of the Department of Economics and The Robert Day School of Economics and Finance from 2006-2009. His expertise is macroeconomics, comparative economic performance, and statistics/econometrics. Prof. Keil has led an important summer exchange program with Yonsei University, Korea since its inception in 2011, and has developed his Silicon Valley Program course, Quantitative Data Analysis, taught to approximately 15 students in the CMC program there.

He is a Fellow of the Rose Institute (CMC) and a Research Associate of the Lowe Institute (CMC), where he leads the joint CMC-UCLA Anderson School Forecast for the Inland Empire. His current research involves minimum wages and employment trends, and business cycle analysis. Professor Keil earned his PhD in economics from the London School of Economics. He earned a Master of Science in econometrics and mathematical economics from LSE, and a Master of Arts in economics at the University of Texas, Austin.

This month we welcome John Tulac. John will be presenting “Risk and Regulatory Compliance”

Risk is part of our every day and business lives. Common understandings of risk are frequently wrong in terms of either the qualitative or quantitative assessment of risk. Understanding risk and effectively implementing a way of thinking, and a business culture to be risk adverse require a systematic approach that is increasing mandated in both process and substance by regulatory law.

In this fast-paced seminar, you will learn how to define and analyze risk and implement successful regulatory compliance programs.

We will discuss:

           Definition of risk and why even sophisticated business people misunderstand it

           The five components of risk analysis

           How contracts handle risk

           The four parts of any regulatory compliance program to deal with risk

           The six steps of implementing any compliance program

           Using systems, checklists, and screens for compliance

John W. Tulac is an international and general business and corporate attorney in private practice since 1977. He holds the prestigious "av" rating for competence and ethics from Martindale Hubbell Law Directory, and is recognized annually in the Bar Register of Preeminent Attorneys as an expert in the field of international business law and as a leading lawyer in LA County and the Inland Empire.

Mr. Tulac is active in all areas of international law including: importing and exporting of goods, agency and distribution agreements, licensing, joint ventures and infrastructure projects. He is extremely involved in oil & gas, electric power generations, sustainable agriculture, and all aspects of business with China. He trains Chinese judges and regulators semi-annually on topics relating to international law and U.S. law.

Currently, Mr. Tulac is adjunct professor emeritus of international business at Cal Poly Pomona where he has also taught business law, entrepreneurial law, law for engineers, and business organizations. Mr. Tulac has served as a judge pro tem for Superior and Municipal courts in LA County and has been a professional mediator for over twenty years.
